About 15 kilometers to the south lies Cape Sagyngdy. The nearest village is Kyzyluzen, located 33 kilometers north of the bay. Just 30 kilometers away is the Tub-Karagan Peninsula, a historic site that once served as a trade route between Khiva and Russia.

A Glimpse into the Past

Blue Bay is formed by the geographical features of the Tulkyli Canyon and the rocky Uzynkuduk formation. As early as the 20th century, local fishermen would gather here in a place once known as “Tulkyli,” which translates from Kazakh as “fox den.”

Nature and Landscape of the Bay

Blue Bay Beach offers a stunning blend of azure-turquoise Caspian waters and golden sand. The region is known for its almost year-round sunny weather, with rain being a rare occurrence. This makes it one of the most visited places by both tourists and nearby residents.

Located not far from Aktau, Blue Bay is one of the most beautiful wild beaches on the Kazakhstani coast of the Caspian Sea.

To the south of the bay, you’ll find remnants of a medieval stone wall. On the northern side of the beach, there’s a preserved section of a multi-track road once used by traditional two-wheeled carts called arbas, common in Central Asia. According to local elders, these carts once transported fish to Fort Shevchenko along this very route.

Around 30 years ago—before tourism took off—local residents would come here to relax, admire the white-gold beaches and seascapes, and explore ancient grottoes.

Flora and Fauna

In spring and summer, the area around Blue Bay is filled with wildflowers and shrubs, including the fragrant wormwood that perfumes the air. In autumn, visitors can forage for berries and native plants.

This remote beach attracts various forms of wildlife. You might see snakes, turtles, lizards, and monitor lizards. Herds of wild horses, gazelles, and saigas can sometimes be seen grazing near the bay. Blue Bay also serves as a stopover for migratory birds such as swans, wild geese, and ducks.

“Devil’s Finger” Rock Formation

One of the bay’s most intriguing natural landmarks is a rocky formation known as "Devil’s Finger," which juts out dramatically over the sea. It is located about 500 meters from the bay—just a 10-minute walk.

From the shore side, the rock features a small cave. Alongside it stretches a narrow beach several kilometers long, dotted with large boulders and pink limestone slabs, smoothed by sun and sea. On the terraces of the cliffs, you can spot natural stone cavities carved by the elements.

A local legend says that if you find the right spot and move slowly along the shore, the outline of the rock takes the shape of a human face. From one angle, it appears sad; from another, joyful.

A Word of Caution

The rocky coast around Devil’s Finger is slippery, and many snakes can be found sunbathing here, so visitors should exercise caution while exploring.

How to Get to Blue Bay Beach in Kazakhstan

This famous wild beach lies along the route from Aktau to Fort Shevchenko. There is no public transport that reaches the bay, so the only way to get there is by private or rented vehicle. Experienced travelers recommend using a 4x4, as the final stretch to the bay leads through steppe terrain.
